Laneige Strawberry Yogurt Pack Review

This is a review for the Laneige Strawberry Yogurt Pack, which I liked to use after the Laneige Strawberry Yogurt Peel. I don't know if the two products work better together, but it has been suggested by the SA every time I bought this product, and I like to use them together because I like to indulge myself in the lovely strawberry scent. The two product combos were my staple for more than 2 years. Like I mentioned before, I have since stopped using the Strawberry Yogurt Peel, and I have also stopped using the Laneige Strawberry Pack with it. However, I continued using the concept of the Strawberry Yogurt Pack because I loved it, only a cheaper and "healthier" version. Hehe, my Korean derm have helped me develop a homemade recipe for this strawberry yogurt pack, with different variations for different skin types, and I wish to share it with you in my next article. This article will be a review of the Laneige Strawberry Yogurt Pack.

This Strawberry Yogurt Pack has a very pleasant smooth gel consistency, just like a typical American yogurt, but with strawberry seeds. :) The smell is lovely like a strawberry milk shake. I like to store it in the fridge so that when I apply it, it has a cooling feeling, and also prolongs the shelf-life of this product, which is said to be prone to expiration.

Pros:
1. Very cooling and soothing after application.
2. Moisturization: this strawberry yogurt pack moisturizes rather well, perhaps not so much as my favorite night cream, but enough to not feel dry after using the Strawberry Yogurt Peel (which I would feel otherwise).
3. Soft and dewy skin: used with the Strawberry Yogurt Peel, I get very smooth and soft skin after use. I realize that the smooth skin is from exfoliation, but after using this pack, I feel my skin is very dewy and elastic. Like if I press my finger on my cheek (which I shouldn't do :)), I can almost see the skin spring right back after I remove my finger.
4. Very good consistency: not thick enough to feel suffocating and not thin enough to feel runny.
5. Prevents acne: yogurt has good bacteria in it, and strawberry has salicylic acid in it, both of which are good for acne-prone skin. I've found that even though using this weekly does not neccessarily prevent a lot of breakouts as to be noticeable, but it does help any acne I may have at that moment go away faster. Very good for a gentle treatment.

Cons:
1. Sensitivity issue: I've known a lot of people who have very sensitive skin report that they are a little allergic to this product, or that this product does not do much. I think this may be due to the scent of the product, which may irritate some people when left on the face for a long time (20 minutes is suggested).
2. Fast expiration: This product seems to have a fast expiration process because it is recommended to be stored in the fridge in the summer. To me, this is a good thing because quite a lot of preservatives would have to be put into a product like this to keep it from expiring soon.

General Comment:
I thought I should mention how I use this product. I know quite a lot of people who wipe this product off with a tissue after 20 minutes and not rinse off. However, I rinse off, and then apply my toner and moisturizer as usual. I think doing this prevents me from becoming overly allergic to the scent and preservatives in the product. And I would advise people with sensitive skin who haven't had much luck with this product to try doing this. :) I honestly think that any nutrients the skin could absorb should have been mostly absorbed within the 20 minutes.

Overall: Really great skin mask that I used once a week for two years. I still use a home-made version of this product, and it works great! :)

Thank You for My 2010 :)

2010 started off with a massive downer when my boyfriend left for a 6 month study abroad programme in Hong Kong. However, we both took this opportunity to broaden our horizons, and while he was experiencing new cultures and travelling loads, I was concentrating on my studies and developed the new hobby that I was looking for - make up. My past major hobby was singing and songwriting (which you can hear here!), but it was a bit of a dead-end hobby where I felt like I've hit my peak and I was just doing it for fun.

Th biggest accomplishment by starting this hobby is my massive increase in confidence. I've found a way to express myself and an activity to improve at, and both have made me more comfortable inside and out. I got my first 'hate' comment today on YouTube and I was surprised at how unphased I was, and I am so sure that this all has a role in it. By making videos and writing blog entries, I hope I'm helping others to find the confidence that I've found in make up!

I've also developed a sense of what I like and what I look good in, and this has made me branch out into higher end products. I started off by thinking that if I want something I'll use everyday, I want it to be high quality, and then the things that I don't use that often, it's ok if it's drugstore. Then I thought about it and I was like.. Why would I even want items that I don't use that often? That being said, I still have my drugstore favourites that I will never replace (cough, Sleek, Rimmel, ELF) :).

But I do love the thought and deliberation I put into buying a specific high-end product, which in turn leads to buying the perfect product for me, and it's incredible how much use I get out of these than a 'bought-on-the-whim' drugstore item. It's hard to give that same consideration to cheaper items. This has completely flipped my make-up taste upside down. This is all embodied in my Project 15 Pan that starts in exactly 9 hours and 30 minutes..

Beyond this, I've found so many great people through YouTube and Blogger. These are the people I have learnt from the most, and I'll take this opportunity to just list some of my favourite YouTubers and Bloggers:

I also wanted to say a massive thank you to all my followers, and all the people that have taken the time to comment on my posts. It has definitely been one of the highlights of my year to see all the support I get! I've recently hit 100 on this blog, and 200 on my YouTube, and I totally have a giveaway planned for the blog-side, so keep your eyes peeled for that in the next week or so :)

Tonight for New Year's, I will be having a meal with my family, and a walk to the local shrine with my dad at 11:30PM, so we can hope for another great year and get some good luck charms and see what our fortunes are for the year :) (my mom doesn't come because she isn't superstitious and she hates the cold :P). The morning will be filled with the traditional Japanese New Year's fooooood :). A part of me wishes I could do a countdown with my friends and boyfriend somewhere hammered out of my face, but.. I love my family :)

(My lovely baby second cousin Arata, who has recently taken the 'Youngest Family Member' title from me ;P And yes, he loves my phone.. very much. Consequently, my phone is manky as hell.)
Thanks again for making this year such a different, successful and meaningful year for me! And let me know what your plans are for the countdown! :)

Laneige Strawberry Yogurt Peel Review

I don't know how I could have forgot to review this gem until a reader asked me if I had tried it. The Laneige Strawberry Yogurt Peel is a chemical peeling exfoliator that takes off the top layer of your skin with chemical enzymes, most of which were claimed to be fruit enzymes. Thus it is supposed to exfoliate your skin very gently, much more gently than physical scrubs and chemical peels (which usually gives a burning sensation, which this does not).
However, despite my love for this product, I actually no longer use it, and have replaced my exfoliator with the Cure Aqua Natural Gel. In this article, I will review this product and explain I have switched. :)

When you gently squeeze the tube, a creamy pinkish gel come out, with some beads resembling strawberry seeds. It smells wonderfully like a strawberry milk shake. I only need a pea sized amount to exfoliate, so one tube lasts a long time. I apply this gel evenly on my face, and starts gently rubbing/drawing circles on my skin until the gel turns into little bits on my fingers and face. Sometimes, I like to wait 30 seconds or so after application before rubbing, because it seems that this allows more time for reaction, and more skin is exfoliated. I get a childish pleasure out of watching the gel turn into little bits on my palm and face. :)

Pros:
1. Very lovely smell: my friend says that the smell just makes her so happy, and I have to agree that the smell is very lovely, not irritating like some products :)
2. Very gentle exfoliation: the gentlest type of exfoliants
3. Slightly moisturizing and soothing
4. Does not over-exfoliate. Fruit enzymes are pretty mild as far as chemical exfoliants go, so this product generally insures that only the skin cells that should come off will come off
5. Leaves my skin feeling very soft

Cons:
1. Some of the balls you see on your skin and face are not actually skin cells that came off: I'm sometimes skeptical, and tried rubbing this product on a piece of unused leather. To my amazement, some of the gel still balled up looking like it was skin. I think this is because the gel is so thick. However, much less gel balls up than when I exfoliated my skin, and there was a runny liquid on the piece of leather, which led me to believe that this peeling gel does actually exfoliate skin. :)
2. Exfoliation power is not very high, so it is not useful if you are deliberately trying to over-exfoliate to deal with stubborn acne, etc. In that case, AHA peels would be much more appropriate.

Overall: A great exfoliator that is very gentle on skin.

Why I switched from this to Cure Aqua Natural Gel:
The Cure Aqua Natural Gel is much more "natural" and contains less chemicals. In a sense, the Cure Aqua Natural Gel is a "no-frills" version of this exfoliator, without the lovely scent or the slightly moisturizing properties. However, I get greater satisfaction from the Cure Aqua Natural Gel because the gel turns into a very thin liquid upon exfoliating, and I can actually see balls of skin of my hands and face, rather than balls of gel containing some of my skin-cells.
In addition, with the Cure Aqua Natural Gel, I know that nothing comes off if there is nothing left on my skin to exfoliate. :)

MAC Fix + Alternatives - BodyShop & MUJI

I was completely set on getting the MAC Fix+, as I've been suffering from 2 things - 1) a dry flakey patch between my eyebrows and 2) a hate for the powdery finish no matter how much I buff powder in.

I was all for paying the £11 (for 100mL), as it doesn't feel much for what it claims to do. It's basically used to set your make up, get rid of that powdery finish, and it can also be used to 'foil' eyeshadows. But then I read that the main ingredient that did all the fabulous things that the MAC Fix + does, is Glycerin.

Keeping this in mind, I went on a search for alternatives that could suit other budgets and lifestyles.

My first alternative is the BodyShop Vitamin E Face Mist (£7 for 100mL)

Glycerin is listed third in the ingredients list (these always go in descending order of amount), and has received some good reviews on YouTube. It apparently smells like rose, and is also good for just a refreshing touch up, like on the plane. The size is exactly the same as the MAC Fix +, just £4 cheaper.

My second alternative, and the one I decided to go for, is the MUJI Sensitive Skin Light Toning Water Moist (£8 for 200mL).

The bottle doesn't have a spray so you need your own atomizer for this product. However, lemme tell you it's 100% worth it. Glycerin is the second ingredient after water, and I jumped at it for the price as well (especially because it's half the price in Japan). It has definitely gotten rid of that powdery feel and my face has such a natural finish. And my make up stays on for longer. My dry patch isn't gone but it's a lot less noticeable.

The biggest plus about getting it in this massive bottle, is that you can pop off the little sifter at the top, and refill into different sized atomizers to have on the go. And you can use the rest as a toner (like it's supposed to be used!). Here are mine:

And I still have 100mL left in the bottle. The one on the top sits on my vanity so I can spray it either directly on my face or on a stippling brush, and the likkle one is in my make-up bag for refreshing during the day.

I am in no position to say that the MAC Fix + is not worth the money or anything like that because I have never tried it. However, there are advantages to the alternatives I've listed. Obviously, the price on both products, and for the BodyShop Vitamin E Face Mist, it is more accessible as there are more BodyShops than there are MAC counters. While MUJI isn't all that widely available, you can always order online, and the money value is so much better. Even better than that, you can make it portable and in a sense, 'multiply' by making it accessible in different places (vanity, on-the-go, bathroom, etc.,). However, the only downside is that you will need your own atomizers, as the bottle doesn't come as a spray (it is a toner after all). These are quite cheap in the likes of Superdrug :)

So yes. The MAC Fix + isn't the only item on the market for this kind of thing. Take a look around and you may find alternatives, but here is my 2 cents, hope you enjoyed :)

Sofina Perfect UV White Protect Review

About two months ago, I bought this sunscreen in Japan because I was going to the beach for a 7 day vacation. I normally wouldn't have defected from my beloved Laneige sunscreen and sunscreen powder, but then I rationalized that since I was in Japan and Laneige products were hard to come by there, and the Sofina Perfect UV line has such a wonderful rating, why not? In fact, I had been dying to find some excuse to try the Sofina Perfect UV Lucent, but couldn't find any till now :P
Anyway, a little brief about the Sofina Perfect UV lineup. This line has actually existed for about five years, and they changed the name of the line about two to three years ago to Perfect UV. The line has three products, all of which has SPF 50 PA+++:
1. Sofina Perfect UV Lucent--supposedly the most original sunscreen in the line
2. Sofina Perfect UV Nuance Up--the sunscreen is supposed to provide a makeup effect besides providing the sunscreen abilities
3. Sofina Perfect UV White Protect--this sunscreen should provide whitening effects and offer the maximum protection. It was said to fade freckles and be very water proof.
The former two products were discontinued last summer, leaving only the White Protect. I was not sure whether I would have chosen the Lucent or the White Protect if they had both been available, since minimalist and maximum protection both sounded extremely appealing to me.
However, I tried out all three at the counter, and am glad to say that I would have picked the White Protect anyway. :) In this article, I will mainly review the White Protect, and very briefly review the other two sunscreens since all three are very similar, with only slight differences.
All three sunscreens are of a milky and runny texture, which was hard to get used to at first. However, I gradually adjusted to the texture and grew to like it very much. The SA told me that for this sunscreen, I have to apply at least 3/4 of a teaspoon for my face, which she said is approximately the amount you get by putting a dot with a 2cm diameter on the back of your hand. Even though it may seem a lot, the runny texture of the sunscreen makes it very easy to apply that much, without looking horrifying. The below review is of the White Protect sunscreen.

Pros:
1. Very natural looking and very light. Does not feel as if I have anything on.
2. Smoothing abilities: The sunscreen has a very high silicone content, which makes it perfect as a primer. It smoothes out my skin, and make it look very nice.
3. Oil-control: This has the best oil-control I have ever seen in a sunscreen. I didn't get much oil on my T-zone until I took this off. I actually carried out the ultimate oil-control test on my skin. I rubbed my  Son Bahyu Horse Oil on the back of my hand in very large amounts so that my hand looks very shiny and a little greasy. Then I applied this sunscreen on top. For five minutes, my hand had a rather expected muddy feeling. However, by the tenth minute, all the oils were absorbed by the sunscreen, and my hand looked very smooth and did not feel greasy or muddy at all.
4. Very water resistant. I went swimming with it for 4 days, and today, I even cried on it (since my hubby is leaving today), and nothing came off.
5. Very good sun protection factor for both UVA and UVB rays: SPF 50 PA+++

Cons:
1. Gives a slight white case: this is not really noticeable on me since I already have very fair skin. However, on my coworker, her face looked white compared to her neck after applying the requisite 3/4 teaspoon. It looked a natural white nonetheless, just weird contrasting with her neck.
2. Not very moisturizing/a little drying: I would not really say this is drying for me since I never felt dry with it as long as I put moisturizer underneath. However, I know a lot of people who would like to skip moisturizer if they are putting on sunscreen, and this sunscreen would definitely feel drying on you that way. I don't really consider it a con because I think that a sunscreen cannot have good oil control and at the same time be moisturizing unless it uses heavy waxes like mineral oil to seal in the moisture, and that would be comedogenic.
3. Hard to remove: this thing seems to only come off with makeup removers like cleansing oils or hardcore makeup removing gels. This is in a way a good thing since it stays on during the day. However, it is also bad for those who hate heavy makeup removers.

Neutral:
Whitening effect: I cannot really see any whitening effect on me or lightening of freckles (since I do not have any, luckily), so I cannot comment on that. However, it has not really faded my hyperpigmentation marks that I got from using Benzoyl Peroxide.

Overall: Really great sunscreen that may replace my staple. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a high protection sunscreen, who isn't allergic to silicones or hate cleansing oils.

Sofina Perfect UV Lucent: This sunscreen is very similar to the White Protect sunscreen except that it doesn't have whitening properties. The sales assistant told me that the water proofing ability is also slightly less. I've noticed that it also has a white cast, but may be slightly less noticeable than the White Protect.
Sofina Perfect UV Nuance Up: This sunscreen is supposed to contain some pigments so that it evens out your skintone. I think this has a light medium coverage like a tinted moisturizer. Otherwise, it is very similar to the White Protect.

Happy New Year, everyone!

The Project 15 Pan: The Intro

I turned 20 almost exactly 7 months ago, and while most years I don't feel much change, this year has been very different for me.

I've become a bit more like my mom (gah..), in that I prefer to 'invest' rather than just 'purchase', and that basically means that I'd rather buy less of more expensive things that are supposed to last me longer and be better quality, than buying loads of cheap things. Does this explain my MAC & NARS purchases recently? :)

With this new theory in mind, I've decided I want to clear out some stuff in my make-up and beauty collection, to 1) make space for new investments 2) not become an OTT make-up junkie 3) save money in the long run 4) to prove to myself (and my lovely bf :P ) that I still have some self-control :P. My first attempt at this is through a Project 15 Pan.

Project Pans are projects where people choose a certain number (as I have chose 15), and do not allow themselves to buy anymore make-up until they have either 'hit pan' or have finished that many number of products. Many people make their own rules for this, and here are mine:

1) I must FINISH all products (not just 'hit pan').
2) A product will NOT count if I have to replace by purchasing
(e.g. Shampoos, foundations; i.e. I don't have a back-up that I can use. This is because my purpose is to reduce my make up, and repurchasing would just.. cancel it out.)
3) I can only include up to 5 beauty products (e.g. lotions, body wash etc.,) out of the 15.
(This is so I don't use up 10 lotions and 5 make-up products.. cuz then that's kind of Project 5 Pan.. in a way..)
4) I have several exceptions:
- I can purchase one product a month.
- I can purchase 1 limited edition item per collection (preferably stay within above exception).
- I can purchase 1 item from a brand that I can't access where I live, if I physically go to a place that sells it
(This is to make sure I have fun when I have a day out in Birmingham, London, Manchester, etc., and include brands like MAC & Sleek :))
- Nail polishes are excluded.
(Added 1/2/2010.. I never intended to count nailpolish, it never actually crossed my mind! Just wanted to add this so people know if I ever do a post on nailpolish!)

I start on January 1st, as a part of my New Year's Resolution (and also so it's easy to count how many days I've been at it :P), and hopefully be finished by my birthday on May 26th.. because it will be sad if I can't treat myself for my 21st lol.

I'll be updating you guys on each product that I finish. And because I have been very bad at keeping up with reviews, I'll accompany each used product with a review :)

I'm quite nervous actually, I'd be so disappointed in myself if I fail! Has anyone else done a Project Pan before? And how did it go? Any tips? :) Wish me luck!
